1980 – Upper Glanmire NS Sciath na Scoil Team

From The Avondhu 22nd April 2021

In previous editions we reviewed Upper Glanmire school successes from various decades from the 1920s to the 1970s. Today we look back at an Upper Glanmire side that would form the backbone to the club winning its first ever underage championship (in 1982). Though in 1980, the school team did not win their Sciath Na Scoil competition, they were a young side and they had some very impressive results. They had a very big 3-04 to 0-00 win over Whitechurch and also beat St. Marks (the Glen) on a scoreline of 2-02 to 1-00.  Glounthane beat the Upper Glanmire by 4 points while it was an agonising 4-01 to 4-00 defeat to parish rivals, and champions from 1979, New Inn that saw the young side lose out on a final spot. The fact that New Inn went onto win the final shows how close the side was.

The team in the final game was Michael Walsh (Coole East), Brian McNamara (Kilcully), JJ Ahern (Ballinvriskig), James Long (Lisnahorna), Ger Duggan (Dublin Pike), John Guerin (Kilcully), Robert O’Donovan (Dublin Pike), DJ Kelleher (Ballinvriskig), Barry O’Brien (Richmond), Richard Kelleher (Ballinvrsikig) Brian Walsh (Ballinoe), Jim Lehane (Dublin Pike), David Mullins (Ballinoe) Dominic Roche (Ballinoe), David O’Flynn (Ballyphilip). Subs: Stephen Bowen (Lisnahorna), Tony Allen (Templeisque) John O’Donovan  (Templemichael), Larry Burke (Ballinoe), Colm Cronin (Gurrane), Anthony Kelleher (Ballyphilip) James Mulcahy (Ballinvrisking), David McCarthy (Kilcully)
