With a break in games for the Leaving Cert exams coming into effect, Friday evening’s football tie with table toppers Diarmuid O Murchús was the last game for a month for the St. Colmcille’s Minor team. It was also their fifth and final game in the Division 1 League in the Mid Region. The visitors to White’s Cross on a balmy Friday evening were unbeaten while Colmcilles had lost one encounter early in the competition. It all meant if the home side were to win it was going to come down to scoring difference as to who topped the table.
Enter the Two Seanies… Despite having his penalty and first rebound saved Sean Whelan’s first half goal after a double save from the O Murchus keeper was the first time there was more than one score between the sides in a bright start to this contest. The visitors kicked some beautiful points in this first quarter but their lead was wiped out by a Seanie Delaney goal. This was followed soon after by Whelan’s goal from the penalty rebounds but the best was yet to come for the Colmcilles. Delaney was played a nice ball down the wing by Ronan Healy and from there just took off, scorching his own man, and at full tilt without breaking stride buried an absolute bullet into the roof of the net. It meant at the short whistle we led 3-09 to 0-05, with Whelan notching 5 of those points – one score better than the next.
Conscious that scoring difference could decide the top spot on the league table the two Seanies continued their scoring spree in the second half – Whelan had 3 more points while Delaney also raised two white flags. However to add to his tally Delaney also scored three further goals in the second half – meaning between the two of them they scored an incredible 6 goals and 10 points
O Murchus had travelled short a number of key players due to injuries and this certainly impacted on their chances here… On the night they were no match for our own Two Johnny’s (aka Seanies) as St. Colmcille’s won out on a scoreline of 6-16 to 0-11, with Joe Dunphy rounding off the scoring. This was enough done to clinch top of the league table.
