St. Colmcille’s had started this year’s campaign in devastating form hitting Buttevant for nine goals and BK Plunketts for five on their way to big wins in their opening two games. When James O’Halloran waltzed through the St Peter’s defence to slot home a goal in the opening 20 seconds, it looked like we could we in for another goal fest in this game which was played in glorious summer-like weather in Carraig Na Bhfear. The lads from Rockchapel and Freemount had other ideas however. Within five minutes they kicked three fine points from play. It has to be said that their point taking was exemplary all evening. In the 7th minute they got their first goal and affirmed their dominance with the next few points from play also. Micheál Leahy kicked the first point for Colmcille’s a full 15 minutes after their opening goal but even the slightest hint of a comeback was quashed when the visitors went up the field and goaled immediately. Like with their first goal, they followed up with the next two scores from play. One was a superb two-pointer which underlined their kicking ability. James O’Halloran kicked the last score of the half to leave the score reading St. Peter’s 2-09 St. Colmcille’s 1-02.
To be fair at this point, Colmcille’s could have wilted but they came out in the second half and started to make a fight of it. At the back, Jamie Murphy had a fine game and intercepted plenty of ball and launched attacks from there. Cian Dunne and Rián O’Farrell scored three points in the opening ten minutes with Peter’s getting one in reply. A scrambled goal and two fine points from Cork under 16 panelist Fachtna Kelleher actually left only 5 points in it with five minutes to go. The visitors did extend out their lead, however, by kicking the last three points of the game. They ran out deserved three points winners.
