St. Colmcille’s 1 – 10 Youghal 3 – 17

REPORT

A dominant second half performance ensured that Youghal progressed to an East Cork final against St. Catherine’s. They are a formidable side that have seen a lot of recent action due to they being the East Cork nominated representatives in the county Championship. They have already qualified for that final. Watergrasshill involvement in the All Ireland Intermediate Club championship meant significant delays to St. Colmcille’s group and the championship as a whole.

Colmcille’s started this game very well. Billy Connolly slotted over a pointed free followed by two efforts from Eddie Coughlan (from play) and a point from distance from Felix Murphy. Seán O’Donoghue scored a fine goal in the eight minute which left his side leading on a score of 1-04 to 0-02. After a period of stalemate, Eddie Coughlan scored his third point from play in the 15th minute to extend the lead. This, however, was to be our last point from play in the game with over three-quarters of the game left to play.

Billy Connolly did get two further points from frees before the short whistle but it was Youghal that were creeping back into the game and they scored six points in the second quarter to leave them trailing by only two points at the break; 1-07 to 0-08.

The second half completely belonged to the sea-siders. Colmcille’s did miss some early chances to extend their lead but with these missed, Youghal completely took over. Enda Cronin and Culann Geary in the half-back line and Devon O’Donoghue and Conor Savage in the forward were particularly good for them. With a quarter of an hour remaining there was only two points which was extended to five when Youghal got their first goal. Colmcille’s never looked like getting back into it and the game was put completely beyond their reach in the 21st minute when Youghal good two quick-fire goals. The game was completely over as a contest at this point and Youghal ran out easy and deserved winners.
