Carrigtwohill 3-06 St. Colmcilles 0-04

St. Colmcille’s Under 12 B footballers were defeated by Carrigtwohill on Thursday evening in Carraig na bhFear, with the visitors running out 3-6 to 0-4 winners in the Rebel Óg East Under 12 Football League.

It was an unusual day for several of the Colmcille’s players, with the team made up of pupils from both Upper Glanmire and Carraig na bhFear National Schools. Earlier in the day, many of them had faced each other in the annual D. O’Driscoll Tournament, named in honour of the former principal of Carraig na bhFear National School. Upper Glanmire came out on top against Carraig na bhFear and subsequently defeated Whitechurch to take home the tournament trophy.

There was also a quick turnaround for some of the players following Wednesday night’s Under 12 hurling league game against Glen Rovers. Goalkeeper Brody Forde and second-half substitute Liam O’Donovan were both involved in that game before returning to action for the footballers the following evening.

Carrigtwohill had the advantage of a strong wind in the first half and made the most of the conditions, building a 2-6 to 0-0 lead by half-time. The visitors’ ability to find the net proved particularly important, with the two goals giving them a significant advantage.

Despite the scoreboard, St. Colmcille’s enjoyed plenty of possession in open play during the first half and created opportunities, but were unable to convert enough of them into scores.

Carrigtwohill added a third goal early in the second half, but Colmcille’s continued to work hard and eventually got on the scoreboard. Darragh McSweeney converted three frees, while Ted Pierce added a point from play following his introduction.

The final scoreline did not fully reflect the amount of possession enjoyed by Colmcille’s, but Carrigtwohill deserved their victory, with their greater efficiency in front of goal ultimately proving decisive.
