St. Colmcille’s 3 – 13 Lisgoold 1 – 09

The St Colmcilles minor hurlers got their league campaign off to the best possible start when they beat Lisgoold in the opening round of the Rebel Og East Under 18 2 hurling league on Saturday last.  The game was played on bone-dry surface in Carraig Na Bhfear.  The Lisgoold lads opened the scoring after 1 minute in what would be the only time in the game that they would lead. Billy Ryan (from play) and a free each from Eddie Coughlan and Sean Whelan put Colmcilles three points to one in the lead. The key moment in this game came in the 15th minute when Micheál Murphy, who was returning after a long absence due to injury, scored a goal from close range. This put five point between the sides. Lisgoold would never get near the Colmcilles lads from hear to the end of the game. Indeed by half time the lead was extended to eight points with the score reading 1-08 to 0-03 when the ref blew the short whistle.

The second half was a pedestrian affair that lacked intensity throughout. Lisgoold to be fair battled for the opening 10 minutes where both sides shared 4 points. In the 12th minute, Evan Flynn who was the outstanding player on view on the day, got the first of his two goals. He, Micheál Murphy and Eddie Coughlan, added further points before Flynn got his second goal on 22 minutes. It was now 3-11 to 0-07 in favour of the home side.Lisgoold did manage to get a major of their own close to the end to put some gloss on the scoresheet from their perspective.
