St. Colmcille’s 2 – 14 Aghada 2 – 09

This was a cracking game in sunny White’s Cross on Monday evening, saw our lads come out with a great victory in a keenly fought contest. While Aghada opened the scoring Alex Flynn and Shane Buckley popped over points, and these in turn were followed by a fortuitous goal when Sean Whelan’s shot lobbed the goalie.

The pace of the game was now frenetic – there was just no let up and it was end to end stuff. Whelan landed 3 more points before the short whistle, Ronan Healy had a peach of a score after a beautiful passage of play, while Sean Delaney raised two white flags, one of which was a fantastic score from distance, from the outside of the boot. Adam Bowen also got his name on the scoresheet with another fine point.

However St. Colmcille’s didn’t have it their own way and Aghada got in for two quick fire goals which saw our 8 point lead whittled back to two before the short whistle – 1-09 to 2-04. Indeed, only for a great Joe Dunphy block they might have been in for a third goal.

The second half was as keenly contested as the first, with Shane Buckley’s goal proving a vital score and giving St Colmcille’s a cushion.  Their defence tightened up greatly – David O Mahony, Aidan Docherty and Mark O Keeffe all winning their battles. Whelan kept the scoreboard ticking over nicely at the other end and this all paved the way for a vital victory for the home side going into the final round of games.
