St Colmcilles Under 13 hurlers put in a really spirited performance in this match played in Carraig Na Bhfear grounds against a skilful Mayfield side.
Mayfield made much the better start and were in for an early goal. in truth could have had a couple more and put the game out of reach. However when Joe Coughlan got a touch to a goal bound effort 5 minutes before the break, it brought Colmcilles to within two points at the short whistle. Tadhg Harden had also rifled over a couple of points from placed balls. It was 1-5 to 1-3 at the break.
Into the second half and Mayfields strength began to take its toll on a St. Colmcille’s defence, despite the best efforts of Michael Gubbins and Eamonn Tattan. Cárthach Kelleher pulled off a fine save but Mayfield were quickest to pounce on the rebound – a deflating goal from a Colmcille’s perspective!
Still the homside continued to battle – Liam Hooley fired over a good point in quick reply.
However when Mayfield raised a third green flag seven minutes from time, it put clear daylight between the sides on the scoreboard as Mayfield were deserved winners despite the best efforts of Colmcilles
