The Junior B footballers also secured their second win of the season with a goal win over St Nicks. This game was played in the Glen Field on Sunday last (20th July). From a White’s Cross perspective, the foundations of victory were firmly laid in the opening 10 minutes. Stephen Whooley, a minor player making his debut at wing forward was a constant thorn in the St Nicks defence. They struggled with his pace and intelligent use of the possession. Though he did not score himself in the opening half, he was responsible for assisting in all of his team’s scores in the opening 30 minutes. Firstly he set up Alfie McEvoy to score his second goal in two games. A few minutes later, it was Shane Cahill who benefitted form the assist as he also finished to the net. Nicks rallied and got the next three scores before White’s Cross again settled and kicked 4 more points before half time. Given the large number of players present a raft of changes were made at half time. Paul Sullivan, one of those introduced, hit the crossbar and the ball went over for the opening point. From here on the game became disjointed from a White’s Cross perspective. Though always in control, we were struggling to put the game away and when the home side scored a goal with 12 minutes remaining, things looked potentially dodgy. A few frees and one from play from center forward Edwin Buckley eventually sealed the win.
