White’s Cross won a very entertaining Junior A football league tie against Bishopstown in a game played at our own club grounds on Thursday night last 8th of July. Proceedings could not have gotten off to a worse start as Bishopstown opened the scoring with two fine points and completely dominating possession. They were awarded a penalty in the 10th minute which they scored and soon followed up with another point to lead by six points. White’s Cross were offered a way back into the game when they were the recipients of the second penalty of the evening. This was uncharacteristically sent wide by Edwin Buckley. The same player had another goal chance shortly after but this second effort also went wide. It seemed that our luck was completely out. James Murphy did add one point before the first water break. From here to half time it was all White’s Cross who added 6 more points without reply to lead at half time by a solitary score – something that would not have been envisaged 20 minutes prior.
Bishopstown equalised just after half time before White’s Cross again extended their lead out to three points when Harry Coughlan, Edwin Buckley and James Murphy all scored. The visitors rallied again and dominated for a while which saw them reel White’s Cross in and level the matters 1 -07 to 0-10. A draw was of no use to White’s Cross to qualify for the final and they showed their character to get the key scores required to get the victory. The next match is next Sunday at morning at home against St. Michaels. This is a must win game if we are to have ay chance to qualify for the final. Our junior B team will play on Tuesday evening at home to Mayfield. A win here will see White’s Cross qualify for the final of this competition.
