In the opening game of the adult season, our Junior A footballers went under by a goal to the current City champions Passage. This was very hard luck on our side as they at least deserved a draw having outscored their opponents by 9 scores to 8. Unfortunately goals win games and Passage got two. The first of those was a finely taken goal by their star player James Kind who gave goalkeeper Ronan Aherne no chance with a powerful shot from distance. This was a blow at the time as White’s Cross had worked their way back into the game after a slow start. A great point from Kevin Buckley and frees from James Murphy saw White’s Cross lead on a score of 0-04 to 0-03 before the Passage goal.
In the third quarter the sides swapped points as Passage maintained a slender lead. In the final quarter White’s Cross finally managed to edge ahead again. Colin Sisk and James Murphy were both outstanding and each added a point from play. Cormac Dervan, corner back, had a great opportunity to finish the game but his shot was turned around the post by Passage netminder Anthony Kidney. James Murphy brought his total to seven point when he converted the resulting 45. White’s Cross now lead by 0-09 to 1-05. Unfortunately they could not see out the game. A speculative shot from a Passage half forward seemed to be going harmlessly wide but somehow one of the corner forwards managed to keep it in and scrape it over the line despite the best efforts of Cormac Manning. This was a hammer blow for White’s Cross who, on such an unpleasant evening for football. Did not have the time to respond. Passage added another point to stretch their winning margin.
