The junior football team got their second win in as many matches following this three goal victory over neighbours Glenville in Glenville last Sunday morning (12th July). The final scoreline does not do justice to the effort of the Glenville side as this was a very competitive game throughout. It took two late Seán Kelly goals to put some gloss on the result. In the opening period, scores were exchanged in quick succession with never more than two points between the sides. Conor Buckley, at full forward, opened the scoring with a point from play. The same player drifted further out the field to field a Sean Kelly kickout. He then set off on a solo-run before laying off to Edwin Buckley to finish with a fine point. Murt Kelleher added a fine score from thirty yards before Edwin Buckley got his second point of the game to leave his side 0-04 to 0-02 ahead. The same player got White’s Cross last score of the first period with a pointed free in between a few Glenville points to leave the sides level at five points each.
Edwin Buckley continued where he left off at the start of the second section of the game by adding two further points from frees. Conor Buckley then added a point from play before the first goal of the game arrived. Good, close passing was finished from close range by none other than regular full back John O’Connell. John, who was featured in an article here on the Avondhu a few weeks back, has been playing adult football since the late 1980s and while he will be regarded was one of the greatest players to play with the club, he certainly does not have a reputation for scoring goals. The goal when it came certainly got the loudest cheer of the day by those watching on from the sidelines.
If a John O’Connell goal is a rarity, the source of the next two goals is equally rare. Seán Kelly started the game in goal and has played most of his underage football there. However, following his brief cameo appearance at full-forward for the final twenty minutes, he may have found a new role. His presence caused the Glenville backline many issues and was an outlet for direct ball in to the forward line for White’s Cross. Both his goals came from his ability to win high ball. His finishing was impressive also. Dylan Burke got the only other score from play in this final third. Glenville probably should have added a goal themselves had it not been for a fine save from Michael Osborne. Unfortunately for White’s Cross, Gearoid Flemming suffered a bad shoulder injury and will be out for the remainder of the year. This was a major disappointment at the end of a very good game.
