St Colmcille’s 3 – 14 Whitechurch 1 – 05

The under 14 hurlers had a busy few weeks in the lead up to this game playing quite a few challenge games against Bandon, Bride Rovers, Charleville and Sarsfields in preparation for this round-robin group stage championship game. It was game that almost did not come to pass, as for 45 minutes, no referee was on site to officiate. Eventually a replacement referee from Blarney arrived to take charge. Credit to both sides for keeping their focus as they put on a fine display for the large crowd gathered. In the first quarter, scores were exchanged one for one with nothing separating the sides. After the first of the water-breaks, Colmcilles took control of the game and Seán Delaney’s goal opened up a first half six point lead on a scoreline of 1-06 to 0-03.

In the second half, Colmcilles extended their dominance on the scoreboard with John Barry and Seán Whelan accounting for the goals and Micheal Murphy and Billy Ryan adding to their respective impressive points tally. Between them on the night, the scored 10 points with Murphy getting 6 while Ryan slotted over 4. Though the final scoreline hints the game was all one way traffic, this would be an unfair summary of the efforts of the Whitechurch lads. Had it not been for three superb saves from goalkeeper Adam O’Halloran, this game would have been a lot closer. Indeed some of Colmiclle’s best players were defenders with Aidan Docherty (full-back) and Ronan Healy at wing back also putting in big performances over the hour.
