The under 14 hurlers made it two wins out of two in their hurling championship following this big win away to Watergrasshill on Friday night last (the 31st of July). This was an impressive performance throughout. The first half was a closely fought out affair until a superb strike from Michéal Murphy on the stroke of half-time gave our lads a real cushion, taking a 1-8 to 0-3 lead into the break. Murphy along with Adam Bowen and Sean Whelan had shared the points tally between them – with Bowen and Whelan each scoring three with Murphy’s pair scored in quick succession midway through the half.
However this was very much a team effort with big performances throughout the team – Adam O Halloran pulled off a number of quality saves that otherwise would have led this game down a very different course. Aidan Docherty at full-back was very solid all through, and aided assuredly by Caelan Garde and Mícheál Mullins in the corners. It was good to see Evan O Flynn back from injury, putting in a commanding performance at six, while Ronan Healy and Joe Dunphy also put in big shifts – Dunphy’s booming clearances were a feature of the game – he even managed to get on the scoresheet in the second half.
The rate of scoring did dry up somewhat in the second half with St. Colmcille’s only managing six further points. However, crucially it was our lads ability to hold their opponents to a solitary point that ensured the victory. The Hill, to their credit, tried and tried for the goals to bring them back into this contest but O Halloran, Docherty and co. were having none of it and would not be beaten on the night. And so, the final score-line finished up on the night: St. Colmcille’s 1-14 Watergrasshill 0-4. This win should ensure that the side qualifies for the semi-final of the championship. There is one remaining group game to be played against Kiltha Óg.
