Pride of place went to the under 14 footballers who secured a place in semi-final of football championship courtesy of a comprehensive victory over Tracton in Minane Bridge.
Our boys were in the right frame of mind taking to the pitch and quickly took control of proceedings. Although we had a few early wides, the scoring boots were soon adjusted. Robert Docherty landed a couple of points from distance. Two goals from Brendan Quain with another from Luke Kelleher were added shortly after. However, it was the inter-play among the forwards that caught the eye, as they repeatedly carved open the home defence to create point-scoring opportunities. Patrick Harrington and Eddie Coughlan were prominent throughout the first half.
At the other end of the field, any forays by Tracton into our half of the pitch were effectively dealt with by the strong half back line of Daniel O’Keeffe, Ethan Ryan and Luke Murphy.
After a great 30 minutes, the score was 3-11 to 0-2. Any hopes of a comeback for the home side were quenched by a strong start for White’s Cross after the change of ends. PJ O’Donovan scored a goal with a good finish to the near post adding to his team’s two early points in the second half. Tracton did rally in the final quarter to add some scores to their total but all in all this was a satisfactory outing for the White’s Cross.
The final score was 4-15 to 3-4. White’s Cross will now meet Lee Gaels in the semi-final.
