White’s Cross suffered a nine point defeat at home in the junior A footall league on Sunday last. However, the result needs to be taken in context and does not reflect the overall story of the game. St Michaels approached the game preparing for their upcoming championship semi final while White’s Cross on the other hand chose to rest the majority of those that have been playing hurling. This provided an opportunity for several young players to play football with guys like 18 year old Jack Stuart making his debut. In the first half White’s Cross were the better sides and points from Edwin Buckley, John Gaffney and Jack Stuart ensured that they opened up an early lead. Some disappointing wides ensured that the lead wasn’t extended and St Michaels managed to level up the game at half time. The Blackrock men, who had the larger panel available to them on the day, upped the ante in the third quarter and open up a commanding lead. Our lads continued to battle, however, and created several chances which were not taken;including a missed penalty.
