White’s Cross 4 – 03 Bishopstown 1 – 07

Our Minor footballers got off to a winning start in 2009 but this win over Bishopstown, has been followed up by defeats to both Delaneys and St. Finbarrs.  Even in defeats there were many positives however and Paul Noonan, Jonathan Kenneally and John Colman will be particularly encouraged by their charges continued efforts in training.  In the Bishopstown game Sean Keane helped himself to three goals, while at the opposite end of the field Jake O Leary pulled off two fine saves to help us win out 4-3 to 1-7 on a blustery Sunday morning. Outside him Barry Colman and Sean Carroll marshalled the defence well.

However in the next outing, and despite the best efforts of Ruairi Murnane, Ian Murphy and Barry Harnedy the White’s Cross defensive unit was prised open time and again by Delaneys who scored 5-6 to our 1-10.

In the third encounter against the Barrs, it looked as though our defence would again suffer as they goaled early on.  However a re-jigging of matters 20 minutes in, with Barry Coleman moving to full-back, flanked by John Ramsay and  Murane tightened up matters immeasurably.  Outside them the switches also helped Eoghan Murphy and Shane O Sullivan as both thundered into this encounter, and they linked up well with Keane, Murphy and others.  In the end the early work done by the Barrs numbers 8, 10 and 11 created too great an obstacle, as we lost out by 1-10 to 2-5.
