White’s Cross 0 – 13 Rathpeacon 1 – 04

With six straight wins recorded in the Junior A football league thus far, our first-team Junior footballers entered their opening round game of the 2008 Capco CPD Football Championship in confident mood.  However, given that it was near neighbours Rathpeacon that we were pitted against, we knew that we would get nothing easy!  In a dour encounter, played before a reasonable crowd at city headquarters, Ballinlough, White’s Cross advanced to the third round on a 0-13 to 1-4 score-line.

The performance itself was no where near the show put on six nights previous in the A league encounter with Nemo Rangers, which saw our lads put on a masterful show, winning out by 1-13 to 0-4.  Then again, as White’s Cross sides know only too well, championship football is a different ball-game altogether!  Mix in with that a tussle, where major bragging rights are at stake, and you will rarely get free-flowing football!  In the championship clash, our full-back line of Victor O Sullivan, Kevin Fennessy and Sean Gorman, was always in top, bar for the well-taken goal which the Blues scored just after half-time.  At the other end of the field it was evident that the speed of our half-forwards, Paul O Sullivan, Conor Buckley and Paddy O Brien was causing Rathpeacon problems but this advantage was not always converted into scores.
