White’s Cross 1 – 10 St. Michaels 1 – 02

Our Under 21 footballers have also entered championship fray in the past month.  On a wet and dreary morning, White’s Cross got off to a blistering start against St. Michaels.  Playing with a wind advantage, they had early points from wing-forward Paul O Sullivan and inspirational 45 metre free-kicks from captain, Denis O Regan.  Minor Chris Long also stepped up to the plate and gave our lads a real upper-hand, when he reacted well to goal from a rebound after 20 minutes.  Elsewhere Sean C Burke won two vital frees, which were also converted for first-half points.

Facing into an increasingly strong wind in the second period, it was time for the defenders to knuckle down.  When Micheals scored a goal, immediately after the restart from a direct ball into their full-forward, our lead did not look nearly so impressive.  However great credit must go to  Conor McAuliffe, Ian Lee, Brendáin Murnane, and Richie Sherlock for their excellent defence-work.  Sherlock,in particular, deserves special mention for the sheer tenacity of his defending and his willingness to put his body on the line to win the ball – gach uile liathróid!
