White’s Cross GAA suffered another loss in the past month with the very sad news that Eddie Buckley passed away after a short period of illness. Eddie has been an ever present at club matches for nearly 30 years – initially drawn in supporting his son Edwin, always his best supporter. In recent years he was very proud also to see grandaughter Mia representing the Club.
He was a very popular personality, not only in White’s Cross, but in GAA circles throughout the city and county. As a valued committee member, he served in the thankless and often unrewarding, yet vital, board delegate role for many years. He made the journey to Ballinlough every Wednesday night to arrange fixtures on behalf of the club. Its no easy task fixing GAA matches in Cork City with trying to keep our own crowd happy and juggling that with the demands of the board, the referees and other clubs. However, Eddie was a great character and he successfully pulled it off for well over a decade. For those in the club that would have accompanied him or filled in for him on rare occasions, they would have seen how well regarded he was by other clubs.
He also worked extremely hard on our lotto committee where he served as secretary until recently – the vital fundraising they have been doing for the past decade making possible developments such as our new astro-turf. Eddie was a gentleman and he will be sadly missed in our Club.
