St. Colmcille’s 4-06 O’Donovan Rossa 2-11

St. Colmcille’s under 13 footballers had a great win over O’Donovan Rossa in the under 13 Premier 2 football league in White’s Cross on a dry Sunday evening last. The home side got off to the best possible start. Cian Ramsell got two goals in the opening three minutes which was punctuated by a George O’Connell point who had made a foray upfield from his wing-back berth. Ross O’Donovan and Corey Forde added another goal and a point before the 10th minute which saw Colmcille’s leading 3-02 to 0-01.

The Skibbereen boys took over the scoring for the next five minutes and kicked three points while Colmcille’s squandered a number of chances. Cian Ramsell added two points in succession to leave the score standing at 3-04 0-04. The visitors kicked the final two scores of the half ; one of them being a goal which made a significant dent in the lead. At half time the score was 3-04 to 1-05.

The home side dominated the opening quarter of the second half too. Ben Cashman got the opening point. Following two points from the away, Ronan Cunningham added a goal and a point. The score read 4-06 to 1-07 and that should have been that. Unfortunately, Colmcille’s gave hope to their opponents by the share number of goal -scoring chances that they missed. Unable to put them to the sword, Rossa began to slowly eat into the Colmcille’s lead. They did this so effectively that the eventual winners were hanging on at the end. If not for sterling performances from Bradly Roche and Danny Twomey, probably the two best performers on the night, they might well have equalized. In the end, the home side did secure the win and are now top of the group with one game remaining.
