Our second junior football team scored six points in a game for a second game in a row when they visited Kilcully to play Rathpeacon on Tuesday April 1st. These sides met twice in 2024 with White’s Cross winning by 12 points in the championship and 17 points in the Junior C championship (which White’s Cross went onto win), hence, White’s Cross went into the game every much expecting the win.
Playing with a stiff wind at their backs, White’s Cross were hoping to build up a big lead in the first half. However, with veterans Brendan Aherne at midfield and Paul O’Neill at center-forward orchestrating matters, it was clear that this Rathpeacon side were not going to pushed over as easily this time. Despite playing against the wind, they opened the scoring in the 2nd minute.
White’s Cross struggled and it wasn’t until the 12th minute when Edwin Buckley opened the scoring for his team with a free. A mini-scoring blitz then came with Brendan Quain and Luke Mullins kicking points in the next three minutes before Rathpeacon got a point after a goal mouth scramble and then kicked two further frees to leave them leading 0-04 to 0-03 after 21 minutes.
There was only one more score before the break and it was an historic one for White’s Cross. Brendan Quain kicked the first ever two-pointer in a competitive game with a superb effort from the outside of his boot. This left the visitors leading by a single point at half time.
The second half was very low scoring. The home side got the first two points which let them leading by 0-06 to 0-05. Dan O’Sullivan came up from center back to kick a fine point. This was in the 11th minute. The last 19 minutes were hectic. White’s Cross pushed hard to win but Rathpeacon defended resolutely. To their credit, Rathpeacon also had plenty of chances to win it. In the end both sides had to a settle a draw. This result leaves both sides rooted to the bottom of the table.
