Our second junior football team suffered a heavy defeat at the hands of Nemo Rangers in the Division 4 Football league. This Nemo side is an experienced outfit with many players having won County Senior championships in years gone by. By contrast, our panel was extremely tight as we have so many injuries and we had a Junior 1 league game earlier that morning where a sizable number of lads had to fill in and were, therefore, unavailable for this game. Nemo started the game well and went 1-07 to no score up. They could have been further ahead had Murt Kelleher not saved Paul Hogan’s penalty and a number of timely interventions from Ronan Quain and Luke Murphy in the full-back line.
White’s Cross did rally coming up to half time and kicked four points. James Buckley started to cause problems for the Nemo full back line and he started this mini-scoring spree. Given the start, trailing by six points at half-time (1-07 to 0-04) was not so bad.
We were dealt a blow at the start of the second half when goalkeeper Murt Kelleher was black-carded. Nemo, who had introduced former Cork senior footballer William Morgan, used their extra man to their advantage and kicked seven points without reply. This ended the game as a contest. White’s Cross battled to end and were unlucky not to have converted some goal chances of our own. Edwin Buckley and Evan Quain kicked our only two scores of the half.
