White’s Cross played a first competitive game against parish rivals Glanmire in over 40 years. This is Glanmire’s first year in the City Division as an official club. To the game itself, White’s Cross got off to the best possible start when Ronan Healy finished with a bullet of a goal past former White’s Cross keeper Jake O’Leary.
Sean Delaney was lively all through and ran at the Glanmire defence at every opportunity. He scored a point from play in the 4th minute. This put his side 1-01 to 0-01 ahead. This was as good as it got from the home side. Unfortunately the next three scores came form the lower parish side. Unfortunately there were some costly errors from the home side that facilitated these scores. Firstly, we were punished 50 meters for dissent which resulted in a tap-over point from the 13 meter line. In the 8th minute, we did not react to a solo-and-go free and Glanmire ghosted in for a goal; this was the second score of the game that had resulted from not being switched on for a solo-and-go. At this point the away side lead 1-04 to 1-01; a lead that would never be relinquished.
To their credit, Glanmire were the better side throughout and moved the ball very well. They were the dominant side in the 2nd and 3rd quarters and pulled well ahead. White’s Cross did come back into it in the last quarter. We ran more at them and deployed more of the solo and go ourselves. Points from Bobby O’Riordan, Conor Buckley and Max Philpott brought us back to four points but Ganmire again finished with two points to deservedly win.
