Our Under 16 footballers who got their 2025 league campaign off to a winning start with a four point victory over Charleville, in the Division 1 North league.
Being their first competitive game played under the new rules our lads adapted really well with a very disciplined performance. Fachtna Kelleher’s goal was the key score in the opening half. It was a fine finish after a one-two with Sam Dunne. In the inside line Darragh O’Driscoll also had two great points in the first half.
Defensively we were also very solid and Charleville struggled for scores throughout. Alan Murphy & Oisin Arrigan turned over great ball while Tom O Sullivan showed great leadership in the pivotal centre back berth while Charlie Horgan was excellent in midfield whether it was winning our own or our opponents kick outs. Colmcille’s led 1-06 to 0-01 at the short whistle.
The north Cork side were always going to rally in the second half and did cut through for a goal after twelve minutes. When they added a second on 21 minutes the margin was down to just two. Indeed only for an excellent save from Rónán Aherne things could have been worse for the home side. Cathal Geaney’s running punched holes in the Charleville defence all through and he upped a gear again in the final quarter… With fresh legs introduced the St. Colmcille’s lads regained control and finished stronger to get their 2025 league campaign in the top flight off to a winning start.
