White’s Cross 2 – 03 Douglas 1 – 00

The  15th of October 2023 will be forever remembered in the hearts of these girls, where they wrote their names into the history books winning the first camogie silverware for White’s Cross.  Exactly 12 months ago to the day, the girls’ felt huge disappointment, losing an U12 county camogie final in Bandon

The Seandún U13 camogie shield final against Douglas was played on perfect conditions for Camogie pn a bright, sunny morning in Douglas. The girls lined out with the same team that defeated Na Piarsiagh in the semi-final a few weeks ago.  It was the homeside that got off to a better start and were first on the scoreboard with a well taken goal. However, that was the only time our goalie Mairead Cashman was beaten on the day and she pulled off some great saves throughout the game to make sure of that.

Halfway through the first half midfielder Ciara O’Callaghan was rewarded for her efforts with a shot from distance finding the back of the Douglas net. With White’s Cross dominating proceedings now, they were unlucky not to grab another goal as the first half drew to a close with Keelin Sneddon soloing down on goal. A resulting free though was converted by Ciara O’Callaghan which aw her team take a 1 point lead into half time.

A free awarded to White’s Cross was again converted by Ciara O’Callaghan and now White’s Cross were 2 points up shortly after half-time. White’s Cross were now playing a lot of the game in the Douglas and were putting a lot of pressure on the Douglas rear-guard.  They were rewarded when Maria Cotter got her chance in front of goal, she made no mistake and suddenly we were 5 points up. The desire and drive not to lose another final was evident as the girls never faltered and kept up the intensity throughout. The final score of the game came from Maria Hayes with a well taken point from play bring the score to White’s Cross 2-3 Douglas 1-0.

The final whistle was met with massive cheers from the traveling supporters as the girls jumped for joy. Their wait for silverware was over. Annie May Twomey collected the Shield, thanked all involved and the girls celebrated their win.
