Our Junior footballers suffered their third straight defeat away to Nemo on Sunday morning last. There was a significant delay to the start of the game as the appointed referee did not turn up at the venue. Eventually both sides agreed to toss for the referee. A Nemo official took up the task and did a fine job throughout to facilitate the game going ahead. White’s Cross could have scored a goal in the opening minute but Daniel Kelleher’s effort was stopped on the line. This was a pity as it was Nemo that went on to completely control the opening stages. Daniel Kelleher got both of White’s Cross scores in the opening quarter; a point followed by a well-taken, soccer-style goal. However, in this period a very much dominant Nemo team scored 2-04 and as it transpired this was the winning of the game. In the second quarter, it was fairly even with Nemo adding three points while Harry Coughlan (from play) and Conor Buckley (free) responded to leave it 2-07 to 1-03 at the interval.
Michael Prout made a raft of changes at the break. One of them, Stephen Whooley, got on the score sheet straight away. Harry Coughlan scored a further two points and Conor Buckley kicked a free in a third quarter that was dominated by White’s Cross. The score after 15 minutes was 2-08 to 1-07. Unfortunately it was the home side that kicked on from here to the end despite substitute Ruairi Quinlan’s goal after a superb run from Harry Coughlan. It was a good game of football where 21 players got a run out.
