As previously documented White’s Cross GAA find themselves fielding a junior hurling team for the first time in 12 years and compounding that have been graded at the top junior grade – a standard of hurling the Club last competed in 20 odd years ago. The league started off with defeats to Vincents by one point, and then to the Blackrock by four points. However in Round 3 the team had a three point victory away to near-neighbours Delaneys 2-10 to 2-7.
This win was a huge boost to this tight panel of players and their management, with stand-out performances from John O Connell, Eoin Murnane and James Cooney. Indeed it was a fortuitous goal from Cooney midway through the first-half that paved the way for this success, in a game our lads led until into the final quarter.
However the pendulum seemed to be swinging in favour of Delaneys 12 minutes from time when they levelled the game, assisted by a strong wind. The resulting long puck out was pinpointed struck by Shane Cahill into the paw of Murt Kelleher, who fed a fine pass into new-comer Eamonn Kelleher, who duly converted with a fine point. Heroic defending and unerring accuracy from free-taker Conor Buckley saw the Cross over the winning line.
