Under 12 Hurling – Lisgoold 3-04 White’s Cross 2-01
Two late goals won this match for the home side. Lisgoold led at half time on a score of 1-02 to 0-01 with Fergal Reid getting the solitary score for White’s Cross. In truth Lisgoold were well on top and only for sound defending from the likes of Jenny Hall and Ciarán Quain they would have been further ahead. In the second half White’s Cross came much more in to the game and dominated for long periods. With Like Cambridge on top at midfield and Robert McElhinney dominant on the 40, White’s Cross’ inside forwards got a greater supply of the ball. This greater possession was soon reflected on the score-board when Cian O’Connell’s second goal brought the sides level. Try as they might, White’s Cross could not get the lead score and paid dearly with two late goals.
Under 10 Football – White’s Cross 4-04 Lisgoold 3-05
This was an absorbing game of football played at the Lisgoold venue. There was never more than one score between two very committed sides. Lisgoold were out of the traps early and got the opening two points. The visitors responded, Corey Cambridge and Cian O Donovan began to win their individual battles and supplied the inside forwards with greater amounts of possession. This paid dividends with goals from Sean Kelly and Sam Heffernan. The action ebbed and flowed before half time and both teams got a number of scores but it was Lisgoold who led at half-time on a score line of 2-04 to 2-01. The second half proved to be as intense as the first half with both teams continuing to give it their all on a very warm evening. White’s Cross started the better of the two teams and with a reshaped forward line got a number of crucial scores. Killian Hall at full forward and Fiachra O’ Connell and Denis Bradley, in a reshaped half-forward line, got fine individual scores, with Hall’s goal proving to be the decisive score. Lisgoold rallied, however, and came back fighting and a fine individual goal by their centre-forward put them right-back in it. Try as they might they could not get the equalizing scores. White’s Cross lived nervously at the end and only for a number of saves from goal-keeper Billy Cronin and last-ditch clearances from Jack Kiely and Padraig Cloran the home side may well have won. As it stands though, White’s Cross hung on for the win. Every player on view deserves to be complimented on their performance and their contribution to what was a very entertaining game played before a sizeable crowd.
Under 8 Football – Lisgoold 4-02 White’s Cross 0-01
The final score may suggest that Lisgoold were easy winners but the truth is that they did not have it all their own way. Given that this was White’s Cross’ first match together, the performance was more important than the result. It was the home side’s ability to get the scores that proved to decisive in a game where both sides enjoyed almost equal amounts of possession. White’s Cross had a number of outstanding performances from Peter Twomey at centre back and Gavin Cronin’s top performance at midfield was rewarded when he scored a fine point. Likewise if the likes of Aaron
Wallace, Luke Murphy, Robert O Driscoll, Cathal O Flynn and Marie Coffey can repeat their performances then it will not be long before this team registers a win.
White’s Cross would like to sincerely thank Lisgoold GAA club for their warm reception and in the professional manner that they organized and managed three games on the one evening. Likewise all 6 teams deserve credit for their efforts in providing three very entertaining games. Each game, though close and hard-fought was played in the best of spirits as it should be.
