Our sister club Whitechurch had an emphatic victory with their second side in the B hurling championship final recently. Under the captaincy of Dave Buckley, this side fought its way to the final with victories over Brian Dillons, Ballinure and Mayfield. However they were pitted in the final against a Na Piarsaigh side seeking a three-in-a-row. Moreover it was a side who had ended our teams championship aspirations in 2 of the previous 3 seasons.
This time however Whitechurch meant business and a tigerish defence, superbly led by keeper Shane Cahill ensured Na Piarsaigh found it difficult to score. The O Drsicoll twins, Pat Foley and Padraig Murnane were simply inspirational, while at the other end Barry Leahy, Mike Meade, Brian O Sullivan and captain Buckey all looked lively.
However it was the defence that can take credit for a commanding 6 point lead at the short-whistle 1-5 to 0-2. This Na Pirsaigh side had never before struggled for scores and it was hard to believe that they only added 2 more scores in the second thirty. Meantime Barry Leahy went on a scoring spree, giving a man-of-the-match performance, to give a score-line of 1-12 to 1-3. Congratulations to all involved.
